Daydreams. I know when I was younger, as kids and teens we daydreamed. It went along with playing. I’m not so sure kids nowadays do much daydreaming since their days are planned so tightly with STUFF that they don’t have as much time to lie underneath a tree and daydream. Usually there is a game playing console in their hand or a television remote or they’re in gymnastics and tumbling and math camps, basketball camps and cheerleading camps and school activities and church activities and family activities and and and. No trees.
Some of my favorite times were lying underneath a weeping willow tree, hidden from the world, daydreaming about stuff. Nothing important. Maybe about a boy. Maybe about what I wanted to be when I grew up. Maybe about the pie mom was making for dinner. Who knows?
If you don’t have daydreams, if you don’t have dreams, you are cheating yourself out of some of the best ways to challenge yourself. About what? To keep growing, stretching and living fully.
I’m not talking about daydreaming about getting some sleep if you have a newborn infant in your house (although that IS important). I’m not talking about daydreaming about what’s for supper tonight (although that is important, too). No, I’m talking BIGGER.
Without dreams, most inventions would never have come into existence. Without dreams, famous paintings would never have been painted. Without dreams, beautiful poetry would still be stuck inside people without expression. Without dreams, great works of history would never exist. Without dreams, generations of people would not be free. Without dreams, what are we?
My friend Celia over at High Heeled Life did a series on 30 minutes and a cuppa tea. Her one driving point was to take time out each day and just relax for 30 minutes, just for yourself. To me this is the equivalent of lying under a tree and daydreaming. You may not drink tea – sip a cola or water or whatever. Just slow down for at least 30 minutes.
While you are sitting for those 30 minutes take some of that time to DAYDREAM. Daydream about what you would do with your current life if money were no object. Daydream about what and who you would become if there were no obstacles in your way. Daydream about something you’ve always wanted to do but never accomplished. Daydream about becoming all you ever wanted to become. DAYDREAM BIG.
And while you are daydreaming, why not figure out something you can do each day toward that one special dream?
While it may be a wee bit too late to become a prima ballerina for the New York City Ballet (unless you’re very young), it is never too late to take dance lessons. Take piano lessons! Go to college – how about culinary school? Dream of art? Go out and buy an easel, paint, charcoal, watercolours, and paper. Take lessons. Start somewhere.
Time will pass whether you pursue your dream or sit around wishing you could pursue your dream.
I believe it is never too late to daydream and it is never too late to do something about those daydreams. You can’t use your age as an excuse to quit daydreaming. There are way too many people who began walking in their dreams later in life. I’m talking in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Those are the ages they BEGAN to do. What’s your excuse?
READY TO START DAYDREAMING? You are the only thing standing in the way of your dream.
Looking back, I guess I’ve gotten all the things I used to daydream about. I wonder how long until my current ones show up?
On my instagram the tag is… Light Sleeper Heavy Dreamer.
I know I am not consistent with visits but when I saw the hearts floating around made me happy and I felt safe. I know weird huh!?
Loved this post. I day dream all the time! Now to put feet to my dreams!
Daydreams are important to your life. Without them you will never reach the full potential you have, let alone even recognize that you have potential. Put action to your dreams. So what if you fail? It is not a crime to fail. Take the lessons-learned, get up, apply them then go again and again and again until you are successful. There will always be someone there to tell you why you can’t and they may never be a cheerleader to you. You have to make the quality decision to move forward regardless of the obstacles.
Nan, it’s past 2 in the morning and I finally, after four uneventful hours of trying, I have a signal from the lame WiFi on this beach! OMG, it’s so frustrating when I have so much to do on the Internet. I know I should be enjoying the beach, the scenery, the vino, but I also want to keep in touch with my friends and blogging. Sigh. Anyhoo, I loved, loved this post. I daydream all the time. You know how I love my alternate realities! hee hee! I believe dreaming is what makes wishes turn into reality! Not to mention how it keeps me busy when I’m standing in line at the supermarket and there is no eye candy to keep me occupied! ha! Thank you for this lovely post and now that I have this window, allow me to tell you I love, love the coconut shampoo and oil! My hair has never smelled prettier and I owe it all to you, friend! Thank you! Hugs from Roxy and me! 🙂
–Love the shaded yellow line; it is absolutely TRUE.
I daydream A Lot… and I also know these daydreams can become reality.
That’s exciting to think about…. you know, the possibility’s that God holds for us.
Loved your post, Nan. Xxxxxx
This is brilliant my friend. Day dreams … are what sets intentions and when that happens the universe listens and WOW – the day dream comes to life. As I read your article it occurred to me ~ when people go about saying how nothing good happens to them, perhaps they have stopped daydreaming and fill their thoughts with worry, which in turn is what they are giving energy to – and getting back. You have me thinking now.
Thank you for the mention, my friend. And I did receive your email. It touched my heart beyond words, I will be responding but just wanted to let you know I did receive it and you are in my thoughts. Hugs and Blessings, C. (HHL)
I do love that last line. I really am what stops my dreams because I think I’ve always been afraid that I will fail. You know what? I am no longer going to let that excuse make me not live. Good post Nan, good post.
