When I was footloose, fancy free or as my mom used to say, “Young and in my youth” I used to make copies and keep bits and pieces of paper that “spoke” to me, touched my heart, hit me as socially vital, or just gave me a belly laugh. I’m STILL unpacking boxes and coming across papers galore, so I am going to post this.
“Mad Magazine” was a part of my formative years. According to Wikipedia it was, “Launched as a comic book before it became a magazine, it was widely imitated and influential, impacting not only satirical media but the entire cultural landscape of the 20th century.” All I know is that it was the strangest magazine I ever read.
(Satire – strong on irony or sarcasm, it is usually meant to be funny, using wit as a weapon, wherein satire, vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement.)
Yeah, ok. Sure. Back when I copied this sometime in 1970-71, it was inspired by a 1970s series of Geritol commercials in which a man boasts of his wife’s seemingly limitless energy and her many accomplishments, then concludes by saying “My wife…I think I’ll keep her.” I HATED LOATHED DESPISED those condescending commercials. This spoke of truth to me. I was all about truth back then:
I bought Mad Magazine! My sicko, pot-polluted, long-haired, hippie cousin turned me on to it….after a hit or two (?). Yea, it was strange, for back then, and for now, but I couldn’t get enough of it. I was all about not being normal back then. Guess it shows now for sure! LOLnLOVE the Geritol spoof ad. Nice! Putting you on my RSS feeds (just learned how to do that) cause that’s how I roll.nHave a great weekend!nTerri
Oh man, that whole thing irritates the crap out of me. It is a funny send off of that awful old commercial. Glad you saved and shared!
